David Alonso saw his intermediate class championship aspirations severely dented following a violent high-speed crash at the Pertamina Mandalika International Street Circuit. The venue on Lombok island once held fond memories as the site where the talented Colombian secured his triumphant Moto3 world crown back in 2024.
However, life in the Moto2 world championship has proven to be a stark contrast for the youngster in Indonesia. After qualifying on the front row during his 2025 debut only to crash out early, the 2026 campaign brought even worse misfortune when both stablemates failed to navigate even the opening turn of the race.
The chaotic multi-bike pileup was triggered when teammate Dani Holgado inadvertently clipped the rear wheel of the #80 machine, instigating a massive highside at the apex. American rider Joe Roberts was also unfortunately collected in the sudden first-corner incident.
The heavy landing on the blistering asphalt left the former lightweight class dominator struggling for breath due to a severe chest contusion, though medical evaluations fortunately confirmed no fractured bones. He managed to board a commercial flight alongside team manager Nico Terol on the Monday following the grand prix.
This disastrous zero-points finish dealt a severe blow to his championship standings, dropping him down to fifth overall with remaining rounds dwindling fast as the paddock heads to the Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island.
