Honda has confirmed that a major power unit upgrade will be ready for this weekend's Dutch Grand Prix. It marks another significant boost for Aston Martin, who introduced their own upgrade package in Hungary ahead of the summer break.
Honda's trackside manager and chief engineer, Shintaro Orihara, revealed that this upgrade is a concrete step to address engine performance, which has been a weakness since the new power unit regulations took effect. Reliability and power have been lacking so far.
Despite the optimism, Orihara declined to give exact lap time improvements, stressing that in Formula 1, there are no magic solutions. "We have to be realistic. This is not a magic update, but we believe it's a good step," he told selected media, including RacingNews365.
In Hungary, Aston Martin shaved off around two seconds with an effective B-spec car. Now, with a fresh Honda engine, hopes are high to close the gap to the top teams. "Every 50 or 100 milliseconds is very important to improve our position," Orihara added.
Good news also came as Honda confirmed no grid penalties will be incurred this weekend. However, the next major engine upgrade will not arrive until 2027. "This is the only major update this year. If we find a small solution to improve performance, that could be on the table, but the next major update will be in 2027," Orihara explained.
This decision signals that Aston Martin is serious about closing the gap. With a new chassis and a more powerful engine, the Dutch GP will be the real test of how far they can leap forward.
