MotoGP Riders Slam Deteriorating Sepang Circuit Surface Ahead of 2026 GP

The premier class MotoGP grid has voiced severe concerns over the heavily deteriorating asphalt at the Sepang International Circuit ahead of the upcoming Malaysian Grand Prix weekend. Delayed resurfacing works have left riders facing a disintegrating track surface that is shedding loose tarmac and gravel during high-speed sessions.

Honda rider Luca Marini spoke candidly about the alarming state of the circuit, pointing out that almost every corner has fallen into an unacceptable condition since pre-season testing earlier this year.

“The condition is really difficult, really strange. The tarmac is completely destroyed, so we just need to find a way to survive better,” Marini stated regarding the crumbling asphalt across the Sepang layout.

Marini added that debris flying off the track surface during race starts could pose a significant hazard for riders starting further down the grid, emphasizing the urgent need for caution throughout the field.

VR46 competitor Fabio Di Giannantonio humorously suggested that competitors might need to don motocross chest protectors due to the high volume of loose stones being kicked up by machines during practice starts.

“It's a motocross track now, we need to wear the chest protector. A lot of rocks were coming from the asphalt. I got so many rocks when I did the practice start behind a guy,” Di Giannantonio explained following Friday's track running.

Meanwhile, Gresini Racing rider Alex Marquez admitted that conditions are borderline in several sections, keeping the entire paddock on edge as teams look for solutions to manage the unexpected surface breakup.
