Lewis Hamilton has declared that Ferrari is currently at a pivotal moment regarding the design and development of its Formula 1 challenger for the upcoming 2027 season. Intensive work behind the scenes across the Maranello factory is already underway with just five grands prix remaining this year, as the fierce fight at the sharp end of the standings demands extreme precision from the technical department.
Although the SF-26 has widely been regarded as the best chassis on the grid this season—with GPS data proving its superiority through the corners over key rivals—internal attention has rapidly shifted toward the future. Amidst a tight drivers' championship battle for second place, Hamilton is locked in a fierce contest against George Russell, Max Verstappen, and team-mate Charles Leclerc, with just a handful of points separating the contenders.

Ferrari introduced its final upgrade package of the season at the United States Grand Prix, proving to be a strong weekend overall despite a poor qualifying session hampering hopes of fighting Kimi Antonelli for the win. Leclerc converted fourth on the grid into second place, while Hamilton turned fifth into fourth, narrowly missing a shot at Verstappen due to a late Virtual Safety Car deployment.

Looking ahead to next year, the British driver is taking an active role in steering the technical direction to resolve minor chassis limitations. "I feel like the team have been doing a really, really good job, and in the background, I'm working on this pivotal moment in terms of steering the car in the right direction for next year," Hamilton told media.
He further detailed the ongoing feedback loop with the design team to address specific performance deficits. "I'm really working on the areas that we need to improve for next year's car and that's partly the discussion over the next couple of weekends and giving feedback to the guys who are designing the parts for next year. [I am] pointing out to them where we can improve on the actual chassis side and the aerodynamic package, and of course, they're working hard to improve our engine for next year. I think if we're able to get to the power units with the engine, we're obviously going to be fighting for wins in the races," he explained.
Decision-making for the 2027 machine began roughly a month ago, focusing on identifying subtle areas that cost lap time in every corner and optimizing the aerodynamic balance while maintaining the inherently strong characteristics of the current car package.
