Haas Drops Esteban Ocon for Ryo Hirakawa in Shock Mexico GP Switch

In a stunning turn of events within the Formula 1 paddock, the Haas F1 team has made the dramatic decision to bench Esteban Ocon for the remainder of the Mexico Grand Prix weekend. The abrupt lineup change comes right in the middle of a high-stakes race weekend at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

The decision follows Ocon's participation in the second practice session where he finished 13th, though he sparked significant internal friction following a tense heated exchange over team radio with race engineer Laura Mueller regarding tyre strategy choices between soft and medium compounds. Shortly after, the team confirmed the sudden driver swap.

As outlined in the official team statement: Ryo Hirakawa will replace Esteban Ocon for the remainder of the weekend’s Mexico City Grand Prix. The Japanese driver participated in FP1 on Friday, finishing 15th overall.

The official statement further noted that Ryo Hirakawa will partner teammate Oliver Bearman through final practice, Saturday's qualifying, and Sunday’s 71-lap grand prix. This momentous occasion marks the official Formula 1 race debut for the 32-year-old.

Hirakawa brings a wealth of motorsport experience to the grid, having claimed the 2017 Super GT title before moving to the World Endurance Championship. His successful tenure with Toyota, featuring two WEC titles and a Le Mans 24 Hours victory, ultimately paved the way for his reserve role with Haas resulting from their technical partnership.

For Ocon, this abrupt exit bears a striking resemblance to how his tenure at Alpine concluded, where he was sidelined ahead of the season finale. Autosport understands that the French driver is now heavily linked to an Aston Martin reserve role following a challenging stint with the American outfit.
