Guenther Steiner Warns Mercedes May Replace George Russell by 2027

Former Haas Formula 1 team principal Guenther Steiner has issued a stark warning that the Mercedes squad could take drastic action to shake up their driver line-up if George Russell continues to struggle through the end of the 2027 season.

The internal dynamic within the Brackley-based outfit has shifted dramatically following the dominant breakout campaign of Russell's teammate, Kimi Antonelli. The young Italian talent has secured nine grand prix victories this year and stands on the verge of claiming his maiden Formula 1 world championship title, putting intense pressure on Russell.

Heading into the Mexican Grand Prix race weekend, Russell holds second place in the drivers' standings but sits a massive 123 points behind Antonelli. Meanwhile, Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton lurks just one point behind in third place, intensifying the battle right beneath the struggling Briton.

Speaking on The Red Flags Podcast, Steiner analyzed that Russell's ongoing challenges stem more from a crisis of confidence than inherent car limitations, comparing his current predicament to the trajectory once faced by Daniel Ricciardo.

"I think it is more a Daniel Ricciardo situation than Lewis," Steiner stated, drawing parallels to Ricciardo's career downturn after being outperformed by Lando Norris at McLaren which ultimately led to his early contract termination at the end of 2022.

"I hope he can find his way back, because Daniel unfortunately didn’t really find his way back, because it even got worse for him when he was let go by McLaren at the time. That basically destroyed him," Steiner added regarding the immense psychological hurdles elite drivers face.

Despite the mounting pressure, the former team boss believes Russell currently benefits from having the unwavering backing of Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff, which serves as a crucial emotional anchor.

However, Formula 1 remains a ruthless environment driven purely by elite performance metrics. Steiner emphasized that Mercedes will ultimately prioritize its corporate goal of winning world championships above all else.

"End of next year, I think, if he’s in the same position as now, Mercedes, and it’s not a personal thing for Toto, Mercedes will be looking, 'what do we need to do here to be manufacturer world champion?' because that is what they are here to do, and you cannot hold that against them," Steiner explained.

"If George doesn’t bring the performance, there will be changes. I’m not saying that they are actively working for changes, they give him time, but if it doesn’t happen, they will make changes," he concluded.
