George Russell has revealed that his biggest source of pressure in the 2026 Formula 1 season is not simply the fight for the world championship. With team-mate Kimi Antonelli dominating the campaign, the Mercedes driver says his main focus remains improving his own performance.
Russell currently sits second in the drivers' championship with 211 points, 81 behind Antonelli. The young Mercedes driver has won eight of the opening 14 rounds, while Russell has taken just two victories himself.
The growing points deficit has made Russell's title challenge increasingly difficult. After the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid, the Briton admitted that the championship was effectively out of reach. However, that has not changed the way he approaches each race weekend.
"I'm going to keep fighting every single race until it's mathematically impossible, but it doesn't change how I go about my job," Russell said ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
Russell's objective remains unchanged: win races and put his Mercedes on pole whenever possible. For now, the gap to Antonelli is not his primary concern.
"I want to try to win every single race and put it on pole every single race. That's my goal. That's what I'm working towards every single weekend," he added.
Russell's Pressure Is About Performance, Not the Title
Russell explained that the pressure he feels has been present throughout the season. Rather than placing the emphasis on becoming world champion, he has been demanding more from himself in terms of performance.
"I don't think I was really putting any pressure on myself before, from a championship standpoint. I was putting pressure on myself from a performance perspective," Russell explained.
The Mercedes driver believes his position in the championship is ultimately a reflection of performance that has not been strong enough to consistently challenge Antonelli. As a result, his priority is not simply reducing the points deficit, but finding the pace required to return to winning form.
"I'm in this position in the championship because the performance hasn't been strong enough. So it's been the case for a while where the pressure has come from trying to improve the performance rather than thinking I need to fight for the championship, because you can only fight for a championship if you've got the performance," he said.
Technical Problems Have Also Disrupted Russell's Season
Russell's campaign has not been determined by outright pace alone. Mercedes has also encountered technical problems that have affected his ability to maximise his points haul.
Russell suffered straight-line speed issues at both the British and Belgian Grands Prix because of software calibration problems affecting Mercedes' hybrid energy deployment system. He also lost a potential victory in Canada after an electronic failure with the power unit ended his race while he was leading.
Despite those setbacks, Russell continues to view performance as the central objective. With more races still remaining, the Mercedes driver is maintaining the same targets: fight for pole position, win races and continue improving his level of performance.
