Sebastien Ogier found himself in the spotlight for the wrong reasons during reconnaissance for Rally Sardinia. The Toyota driver was caught speeding at 61.1 km/h in a 30 km/h zone, resulting in a i775 fine from the stewards.
It's not the first time Ogier has faced penalties for speeding. At Rally Estonia earlier this summer, he was caught twice by police. The first offence cost him i275, while the second, aggravated by being a repeat offence during the same reconnaissance period, cost i1,600.
This latest incident adds to a growing list of off-stage disciplinary issues. Although it doesn't affect his championship position, the fine serves as a reminder that traffic rules are strictly enforced during reconnaissance, even for an eight-time world champion.
On the competitive side, Ogier is no longer in the title fight this season. With no championship at stake, his focus shifts to enjoying the rally and helping the team score constructor points.
Rally Sardinia kicks off with a shakedown on Thursday morning, followed by a spectator stage later in the day. The event features 17 special stages covering just over 307 kilometres, concluding on Sunday. The dusty, narrow roads of Sardinia always provide a stern test for crews.
For Ogier, this event could be an emotional one. Speculation about his future with Toyota remains unresolved. Will Sardinia be his last outing as a factory driver? Only time will tell.
