The competitive landscape at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodrguez took shape on Friday as George Russell pointed to Ferrari as the primary threat heading into the crucial sessions of the weekend. The Italian outfit asserted its pace during Friday practice as Charles Leclerc topped the timesheets in both sessions, setting a strong benchmark for the rest of the Formula 1 grid to chase down under demanding altitude conditions.
Despite the Scuderia leading the way, the opening day of running featured a few setbacks up and down the pit lane. Lewis Hamilton was forced to cut short his running in the second practice session after experiencing a power unit issue that required him to pull his car over safely. Meanwhile, Russell had to watch from the sidelines during the opening hour while rookie Fred Vesti took over his cockpit.
Once the British driver stepped back into his machinery for the afternoon session, he quickly found a strong rhythm to finish third overall. He ended the day just a tenth of a second shy of the leading benchmark, proving that the Silver Arrows remain firmly in the fight for the front rows despite encountering unique technical hurdles.

"It's fair to say Ferrari is looking strongest at the moment," Russell noted when evaluating the competitive order. Highlighting the variable nature of the timesheets, he added that Leclerc missed out on completing a clean flying lap while his teammate dealt with reliability trouble. He emphasized that once the grid heads into the final qualifying segment, chassis efficiency will play a decisive role in determining the outcome.
Teams are also grappling with the severe altitude of Mexico City, which brings low air density, reduced grip levels, and turbo lag into the equation. With the top four constructors separated by razor-thin margins, Russell stressed that extracting the maximum performance from the car when it counts most will separate the pole-sitter from the chasing pack.
