George Russell Dismisses F1 Championship P2 Battle After US GP

George Russell has dismissed the importance of finishing second in the Formula 1 drivers' championship, stating that runner-up spots hold no real meaning for him. The Mercedes driver made his stance clear as the battle for the championship runner-up position tightened significantly following the latest grand prix weekend.

According to Motorsport.com, the British driver finished eighth at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin after receiving a five-second time penalty. The sanction was handed down for leaving the track and gaining an advantage during a hard-fought wheel-to-wheel battle with McLaren's Oscar Piastri.

While his team-mate secured a dominant victory in Austin and stands on the verge of claiming the drivers' crown, the scrap immediately behind him has intensified drastically. Only a razor-thin margin now separates the drivers fighting over the remaining podium positions in the overall standings.

Asked about how much importance he places on holding onto second place in the championship table, Russell redirected his entire focus toward the team's pursuit of the constructors' world championship.

"For me, as long as we win the constructors', that's the main thing," Russell explained regarding his core priorities for the racing outfit.

"For the team, obviously I'd like to finish best of the rest, but P2, P3, P5 is not champion, so it doesn't mean anything," he added bluntly.

Reflecting on his mental journey throughout the grueling 2026 campaign, Russell admitted that his perspective on the championship has experienced various ups and downs. He noted that early season struggles with performance forced him to heavily evaluate both his own driving standards and the car's development trajectory before mounting a points comeback later in the year.
