Heading into the final stretch of the 2026 Formula 1 season, George Russell has made bold claims about what Mercedes need to do to end the year on a high. Throughout the majority of the campaign, the Silver Arrows have stood out as the benchmark team on the grid, with Russell and his teammate Kimi Antonelli sharing an impressive tally of 11 Grand Prix victories alongside four Sprint Race triumphs.
However, the competitive landscape shifted dramatically following the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Max Verstappen and Red Bull have once again emerged as a formidable thorn in Mercedes' side, staging a fierce resurgence that has shaken up the championship battle in the final phase of the year.
The Dutch driver dominated consecutive race weekends in Malaysia and Singapore, following a strong second-place finish in Baku where he crossed the finish line just behind race winner Russell. The turning point for Mercedes' technical trajectory arrived with a new upgrade package intended to extend their advantage over the rest of the grid at Sepang.

Instead of delivering a performance boost, the team struggled to unlock the potential of the new parts at the Sepang International Circuit. This technical hurdle prompted Russell to revert to the previous car specification for Singapore, while Antonelli opted to continue data collection with the updated components.
With only six race weekends remaining on the calendar, Russell emphasized to Sky Sports that mastering these technical modifications is now the absolute priority for the engineering department:
"The goal right now is trying to improve the car because we were very much the dominant team for this whole season," Russell stated. "Then you look at the recent races, Red Bull have been very much the best. You look at Baku, and Max was a similar level to me, you go to Malaysia, totally different track, you go to Singapore, totally different track again, and he's dominated for the last two weekends. So, right now as a team, our goal is to try and get on top of these updates."
Despite Russell's urgent call to action regarding car performance for the final rounds, Mercedes are still on course to wrap up major championship milestones. The team will likely secure the Drivers' Championship crown at the upcoming United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas, though it is projected to land in the hands of Antonelli rather than Russell.
