Alex Marquez is seriously considering skipping next week's Qatar Grand Prix to undergo early surgery on his right shoulder and collarbone. The Spanish rider is battling persistent physical issues and wants to ensure his recovery does not compromise his preparations for his upcoming high-profile switch to factory machinery.
The rider revealed after the Sepang Sprint that he and his doctor, Dr. Samuel Antuna, are actively exploring whether the surgery—originally scheduled for the end of the season—can be brought forward. One of the logistical options on the table involves flying straight to Madrid to undergo the procedure promptly, addressing both the plate previously inserted and a troublesome bursitis issue stemming from a past crash in Barcelona.
"We are looking at the possibilities together with doctor Samuel Antuna, because it's not just about the plate. Other problems are also at play," said Marquez, admitting that he has relied on pain-killing injections during every Grand Prix weekend since his accident at Montmelo.

The overriding priority behind the decision to accelerate the surgery is his upcoming transition. Leaving Gresini Racing at the end of the year, he is slated to join the factory KTM squad and needs to be fully fit for the crucial Valencia test, where he will sample the brand-new 850cc machine for the very first time.
By undergoing the operation now, he hopes to secure enough recovery time to avoid starting his factory tenure on the back foot. A similar preventative approach was successfully taken previously by Fabio Di Giannantonio, who will remarkably become his teammate next season. Meanwhile, these physical struggles already hindered his weekend in Malaysia, where a strong run from pole in the Sepang Sprint was cut short by a high-speed crash.
