George Russell fends off Lando Norris at the start of the sprint

George Russell delivered a commanding performance to win the sprint race at the Dutch Grand Prix, earning crucial points in his Formula 1 world championship campaign.

The 28-year-old Briton arrived at the weekend trailing Mercedes team-mate and championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli by 59 points. However, Russell managed to withstand early pressure from McLaren’s Lando Norris before pulling clear.

After successfully defending his lead in the opening laps, Russell converted his pole position from Friday into his third sprint win of the 2026 season, becoming the only repeat sprint winner this year.

Despite remaining third in the standings, Russell has closed to within three points of second-placed Lewis Hamilton and now trails Antonelli by 56 points.

The only overtake among the frontrunners came on lap 18 when Charles Leclerc, on soft tyres in his Ferrari, dived down the inside of Norris at Turn 1 to snatch second. Norris faded in the closing stages but just managed to hold off Antonelli, who settled for fourth after jumping Oscar Piastri at the start.

Home hero Max Verstappen took sixth, ahead of his great rival Lewis Hamilton, who was left frustrated in seventh after his sprint qualifying disappointment on Friday. Pierre Gasly secured the final point for Alpine in eighth, ahead of Audi’s Gabriel Bortoleto and Arvid Lindblad, who rounded out the top ten for Racing Bulls.

Heavy rain began to fall on the final lap as the field took the chequered flag. Nico Hulkenberg was the only retirement after a power issue in his Audi.
