Pierre Gasly stunned the paddock by securing his first-ever Formula 1 pole position at Monza, edging out George Russell of Mercedes and Oscar Piastri of McLaren in a thrilling qualifying session on Saturday.
The Alpine driver, who won here in 2020, was near the top throughout, but his final flying lap in Q3 was nothing short of spectacular, launching him ahead of his rivals.
Last-Lap Drama and Front-Row Shake-Up
After the first runs in Q3, Gasly sat third behind Russell and Piastri. But on his second attempt, the Frenchman delivered a stunning lap to snatch pole, sending shockwaves through the circuit.
Behind him, Ferrari's practice promise faded, with Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton settling for fourth and fifth. Max Verstappen could only manage sixth for Red Bull.
Home hero Kimi Antonelli took seventh but will drop down the grid due to an engine penalty. Franco Colapinto made it two Alpines in Q3 with eighth place.
Mixed Fortunes Behind and Engine Penalties
Lando Norris struggled again with brake issues and could only qualify ninth, with Arvid Lindblad rounding out the top ten for Racing Bulls.
Lewis Hamilton nearly missed Q3, beating Gabriel Bortoleto by just one-thousandth of a second. The Brazilian will start 11th. Liam Lawson, also carrying an engine penalty, could only manage 14th.
Yuki Tsunoda had a tough session, dropping out in Q1. Alexander Albon played the team game by giving a tow to his Williams teammate, but he'll start 18th due to his own penalty.
