Two new car models have been made eligible for the Bathurst 6 Hour in 2027. The Ford Mustang Dark Horse and the latest-generation Honda Civic Type R (FL5) have been approved after the sporting and technical regulations for the event were released. This marks the biggest change from the previous year, while the class structure, pit stop formats, and other key sporting regulations remain unchanged.
The Mustang Dark Horse will compete in Class A2 (Extreme Performance – Naturally Aspirated), joining the GT, Mach 1, and Bullitt variants, along with a suite of V8-powered machines including the Chevrolet Camaro and various HSV models. The arrival of the Dark Horse adds another high-performance contender ready to tackle Mount Panorama.
Meanwhile, the latest Honda Civic Type R (FL5, 2023-on) will enter Class B1 (High Performance – Forced Induction). This is welcome news for fans of high-performance hatchbacks, as the new Civic Type R is renowned for its sharp handling and potent power delivery.
Interestingly, while BMW has dominated the event since its inception—particularly through Class X (Ultimate Performance) entries since 2021—Class A2 cars have emerged as genuine outright contenders in recent years. In this year's running, Thomas Randle led home a trio of A2 entries, with just 6.6 seconds covering the four cars after six hours of racing. This fierce competition proves that the A2 class is no longer just an afterthought.
Entries for the 2027 Bathurst 6 Hour open on Wednesday, September 23, and will close on December 16. The last two events have featured a capacity grid of 72 cars, both standing as the largest Mount Panorama endurance fields ever.
In fact, within the first eight hours of entries opening last year, a record-breaking 57 entries were lodged—compared to 36 in 2024—and the full grid was filled within 24 hours. With the addition of these two new models, the battle for the 2027 edition is expected to be even more intense.
