FIA Error Left Drivers Without Full Power in Sprint Qualifying

An error by the FIA meant not all cars had full power during their final runs in the first part of sprint qualifying at Formula 1’s Singapore Grand Prix. The disruption started after a red flag in SQ1 on Friday in Singapore, which was caused by Sergio Perez breaking his Cadillac’s front wing in an unfortunate incident.

Once the session resumed with six minutes remaining, there was theoretically enough time for drivers to complete two flying laps. However, run plans varied significantly, and depending on the precise timing of their push laps, drivers were severely compromised by unexpectedly having less engine power at their disposal than anticipated.

Several drivers reported their bemusement over the radio, even while still out on their push laps, as they realized they only had normal race deployment available instead of the full energy usage and power deployment that typically accompanies a qualifying session.

Mercedes driver George Russell was explicitly told during the session that it was an FIA settings issue at the moment, while others were simultaneously informed that the glitch was impacting the entire field across different garages.

During the red flag interruption, overtake mode—which allows drivers to utilize maximum energy usage compared to standard race restrictions—was disabled as per protocol. A human error in race control meant this specific setting was not properly reactivated once the session resumed.
