Fernando Alonso Tests Prodrive Car in Morocco, Fueling Rumors of a 2027 Dakar Rally Entry

Fernando Alonso has been spotted conducting secretive testing sessions in Morocco behind the wheel of a rugged machine prepared by Prodrive. Although the Spanish driver previously dismissed the possibility of entering the legendary rally-raid event in the 2027 season, evidence from the desert testing grounds points to an entirely different trajectory.

Spanish journalist Gerard Farre recently unveiled exclusive visual documentation on his personal Instagram profile. The footage clearly captures the two-time world champion pushing a pitch-black test vehicle to its limits across the Moroccan dunes, wearing matching unmarked black racing overalls while putting the machinery through its paces.

Prodrive's involvement in this clandestine test has sent ripples through the international motorsport paddock. The renowned engineering outfit previously collaborated with Dacia on their Dakar initiatives, but sources suggest the squad is now gearing up to prepare operations under the banner of Aston Martin, the prestigious British manufacturer that currently employs the veteran in Formula 1.

Earlier, during the high-stakes race weekend in Singapore, the Oviedo-born star explicitly ruled out taking part in the 2027 edition of the endurance classic. He argued at the time that the grueling schedule of the desert raid was fundamentally incompatible with his rigorous Formula 1 commitments, following the contract renewal he signed with his current team.

Despite these public denials, the seasoned competitor is no stranger to the unpredictable terrain of cross-country rallying. He previously contested the Dakar back in 2020, successfully crossing the finish line in 13th place overall while coming agonizingly close to securing a historic stage victory during his maiden appearance.

Over the years, the Spaniard has repeatedly voiced his desire to make a triumphant return to the iconic rally-raid, maintaining that he would only step foot in a raid car again once he felt fully prepared and genuinely competitive. While these recent desert runs in Morocco do not serve as an official guarantee of a 2027 entry, they unquestionably confirm that the tantalizing prospect remains firmly on the table.

Meanwhile, external factors continue to loom over the 2027 endurance calendar, which is officially slated to run from January 1 to 15 in Saudi Arabia. Ongoing security tensions and geopolitical instabilities across the Middle East mean organizers could potentially relocate the entire event, with Morocco sitting comfortably as the primary alternative host nation if a venue shift becomes necessary.
