Fabio Quartararo delivered Yamaha its strongest weekend of the 2026 MotoGP season after finishing sixth at the French Grand Prix in Le Mans. The result marked Yamaha’s first top-10 grand prix finish of the year and provided a major morale boost following an extremely difficult opening phase for the Japanese manufacturer.

Quartararo’s weekend initially started poorly after finishing only 17th during Friday practice. However, the 2021 MotoGP world champion successfully progressed through Q1 and secured sixth on the starting grid before converting that pace into consecutive top-six finishes in both the Sprint and Sunday’s grand prix.

His fifth place in the Sprint race also represented Yamaha’s best race result of the 2026 campaign so far. Prior to Le Mans, Yamaha’s strongest Sunday result had only been 14th place, achieved by Quartararo in Thailand and Alex Rins in Brazil.

"We knew the first four races were extremely difficult. But this weekend was clearly our best of the season and I think we made a very important step forward," said Quartararo.

From a technical perspective, Yamaha’s improvement at Le Mans was particularly visible during the opening laps and heavy-braking sections. Quartararo opted for the soft front tyre while most riders inside the top 10 selected the harder compound, a strategy that helped him aggressively defend track position during the early stages.

The French rider admitted that the start phase became the key factor behind Yamaha’s competitive result. With the M1 still lacking outright acceleration and top-speed performance compared to Ducati and Aprilia, Quartararo maximised his opportunity during the opening laps before tyre degradation gradually increased later in the race.

"I gave absolutely everything at the start because I knew that was my best opportunity to stay near the front," he explained.

Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP team director Massimo Meregalli described the Le Mans result as a crucial mindset shift for the entire organisation. Beyond finally returning to the top 10, Yamaha also finished only seven seconds behind the race winner, a gap considered significantly more competitive than during previous rounds.

According to Meregalli, Quartararo’s improved form became evident from Saturday morning FP2 when he advanced into Q2 with lap times close to the circuit record pace established by Marc Marquez. Yamaha now hopes the post-race Barcelona test will unlock further gains before the upcoming Catalan Grand Prix.

Although Yamaha still trails Ducati and Aprilia in outright performance, Le Mans provided strong evidence that the manufacturer is beginning to establish a more stable development direction for the 2026 M1. With MotoGP entering a more technical European phase of the calendar, Yamaha’s ability to maintain this momentum could become critical in its attempt to consistently return to front-running contention.
