George Russell secured pole position for the 2026 Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver delivered an impressive performance in qualifying, beating his main rivals. However, attention also turned to the Aston Martin duo, Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll, who will start from the back of the grid due to power unit component changes.
Qualifying was intense, with Russell showing incredible speed on the Baku street circuit. He was followed by Charles Leclerc of Ferrari, who will start second, and Oscar Piastri of McLaren in third. Meanwhile, Max Verstappen had to settle for eighth on the grid after struggling to find rhythm in qualifying.
The power unit changes for both Aston Martin cars dealt a heavy blow to the Silverstone-based team. Alonso and Stroll had actually made it into Q2, but the penalty sent them to the back, forcing them to work extra hard to score points. This is a significant challenge as the Baku circuit is notoriously difficult for overtaking.
