F1 has officially unveiled its 24-race calendar for the 2027 season, with a significant expansion of the sprint format to 10 events. Monaco, known for its narrow and overtaking-unfriendly streets, will host its first-ever sprint race, while Bahrain and Abu Dhabi remain the season's opening and closing rounds.
The 2027 season will kick off on March 14 at the Bahrain International Circuit as the opener, followed by Saudi Arabia in a double-header. Melbourne, traditionally the opener, becomes the third race. After rounds in Japan and China, F1 heads to Miami and Montreal in May. Canada's May 23 date means it won't clash with the Indy 500.
Europe welcomes F1 with the Monaco Grand Prix on June 6, which will feature a sprint race for the first time. Despite the street circuit's limited overtaking opportunities, F1 aims to capitalize on Monaco's qualifying spectacle by offering two separate qualifying sessions on Friday and Saturday. Portugal returns to the calendar for the first time since 2021, with a race at the Algarve circuit in Portimao on June 20. Then comes the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on July 4, followed by Austria, Belgium, and Hungary, which wraps up the first half of the season on August 1.
After the summer break, action resumes in Italy on September 5, followed by Madrid. Turkey also returns on October 3 as part of a triple-header with Baku and Singapore. Another triple-header follows in the Americas with Austin, Mexico, and Brazil, while Las Vegas becomes a standalone race on November 20. The season is set to close with a double-header in Qatar and Abu Dhabi, both featuring the sprint format.
Monaco is one of 10 sprint races, up from six. Bahrain, Australia, Japan, and Abu Dhabi are also set for a sprint debut, while the format returns to Canada, Britain, Italy, Brazil, and Qatar. F1 cited strong demand and commercial reasons for the expansion.
In an official statement, F1 revealed data supporting the expansion: "Due to the continued success and strong demand for the format, the number of Sprint events has increased from six to ten for 2027, delivering even more competitive action across the season for fans, promoters, broadcasters, and partners. Since the Sprint was introduced in 2021, the data shows that total viewership of Sprint weekends is 12% higher than non-Sprint weekends, Sprint Qualifying is up to three times more popular with fans than Free Practice, 82% of attendees at Sprint weekends say it adds value to their ticket, and 75% of F1 fans believe Sprint events ..."
With 10 sprints, the 2027 season promises more competitive action and, of course, more on-track drama. Fans can look forward to fierce battles at every round, including Monaco, which typically offers a qualifying spectacle.
