F1 2026: Haas Left Behind as Rivals Develop Faster

Haas started the 2026 F1 season with a bang, but development by rivals in the midfield has left the American team trailing. After the first half of the season, the Kannapolis-based squad sits seventh in the constructors' standings with 21 points, thanks to the impressive form of Oliver Bearman.

However, the lack of development progress is the main concern. Haas, which remains the smallest team on the grid and the only one not operating at the budget cap, surprised many with a competitive VF-26. Bearman even outpaced Red Bull in China, taking fifth place.

Unfortunately, as rivals in the midfield brought major upgrades, Haas began to fall behind. Racing Bulls' floor upgrade in Canada propelled them forward, while Audi also improved, leaving Haas struggling since the Spanish Grand Prix. Their best result in the last five races was 12th at Silverstone.

A second issue comes from the other side of the garage. Esteban Ocon has yet to score a point, and his dip in form raises questions about his future. But there is a mitigating factor: inconsistent build quality of some parts, which has affected Ocon's confidence in the VF-26.

The technical partnership with Toyota could be a lifeline. Haas will soon have their own simulator for the first time, allowing them to test drivers and increase manufacturing capacity. This could be key to closing the gap in the second half of the season.

Grade: C-

Despite a strong start, failure to match rivals' development pace lowers Haas's grade. With limited resources, the challenge for Ayao Komatsu's team is significant, but the potential for a comeback remains, especially with Toyota's support and the relentless effort of the crew.
