Ex-F1 Boss Christian Horner Proposes Virtual Pitwall Access for Fans

Former Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has suggested an innovative way to revolutionize the fan experience in Formula 1 by allowing supporters to sit virtually on their favorite team's pitwall. This proposed move aims to offer greater insight into complex race strategies and high-pressure decision-making processes.

Having spent the past 15 months watching grands prix purely as a fan for the first time in his career after departing Red Bull in July 2025, Horner admitted to being surprised by the vast gap between the wealth of data available on the pitwall compared to standard television broadcasts. Speaking at the Autosport Business Exchange in New York, he shared his unique perspective on transitioning from insider to spectator.

"But for me, it was also a different perspective. As a fan, as a spectator, suddenly watching races with commentators that I hadn't heard for 25 years and suddenly feeling... Going from that sort of cocoon on the pitwall with all that information and knowledge and strategies and competitor analysis and so on, suddenly you've just got the screen with the commentators explaining what's going on and different graphics," Horner stated, as reported by Motorsport.com.

Horner acknowledged that teams traditionally fight against transparency of this nature to protect their intellectual property and competitive advantages. However, given modern viewers' massive appetite for data, analytics, and behind-the-scenes communication, he believes that lifting the lid on team radio and strategy sessions would greatly enhance the overall viewing experience.

"Maybe make it interactive. Why not sit on the pitwall, virtually, of your favourite team, understand how they're getting to the decisions that they are, the discussions that they're having. Now, as a team, I would have argued against that because you don't want to be giving that information away. But, at the end of the day, sport is entertainment," he added.
