Lando Norris was forced to settle for sixth place on the grid after encountering a power unit issue during qualifying for the Formula 1 Bahrain Grand Prix at Sepang. The McLaren driver finished six tenths adrift of polesitter Max Verstappen.

A lap time of 1m35.757s left the reigning world champion just 0.005s ahead of team-mate Oscar Piastri in seventh. Norris openly admitted that his primary deficit stemmed from a lack of top-end speed along Sepang's lengthy straights, attributing the shortfall to unoptimized power unit integration with the Mercedes machinery.

This underlying problem has occasionally hindered McLaren since the introduction of the 2026 regulations, given the steep learning curve faced by customer teams with complex modern power units. Although summer upgrades in Spa offered notable relief, the Malaysian weekend exposed lingering performance limitations.

Reflecting on his session, Norris insisted his flying lap was robust, yet expressed frustration at continuously bleeding time on every straight. The recurring aerodynamic and power deficiency not only compromised Saturday's outcome but also sets up a challenging strategic battle for Sunday's main race.
