MotoGP, Sportrik Media - Davide Tardozzi of Ducati Lenovo Team has responded to speculation linking Gresini Racing with a potential switch to Honda HRC for the 2027 MotoGP season.

Ducati’s satellite structure, long considered a cornerstone of its dominance in MotoGP, is facing uncertainty following reports during the Brazilian Grand Prix weekend. The Italian manufacturer currently operates the largest presence on the grid, with six bikes across its factory team, Gresini, and VR46 Racing Team.

This multi-team approach has enabled Ducati to maximise technical data collection and maintain competitive depth across different rider line-ups. However, recent developments suggest that this structure could be subject to change in the coming seasons.

Satellite Structure Under Pressure

In 2026, Ducati fields two GP26 machines in its factory squad, alongside a mix of GP26 and GP25 bikes at Gresini and VR46. Despite a challenging start to the season, Ducati’s only grand prix podium so far has come from a satellite entry, with Fabio Di Giannantonio securing third place for VR46 in Brazil.

This result underlines the continued importance of satellite teams within Ducati’s competitive framework. Losing a partner such as Gresini would reduce both its on-track representation and its capacity for real-time data acquisition.

Reports emerging from the Brazil weekend indicate that Gresini is considering a return to Honda machinery in 2027, potentially ending its partnership with Ducati that began in 2022.

Historical Context of Gresini-Honda Link

Gresini Racing previously enjoyed a long-standing relationship with Honda from 2002 to 2014. During that period, the team achieved notable success, including runner-up finishes in the world championship in 2003, 2004, and 2005.

Following its Honda era, Gresini transitioned into Aprilia’s factory team before returning to independent status and aligning with Ducati in 2022. Since then, the team has consistently delivered strong performances, including race wins with multiple riders despite not always having access to full factory-spec machinery.

In 2026, Gresini finally secured a full-spec Ducati for Alex Marquez, marking a step forward in its integration within the Ducati structure.

Rider Market Dynamics Add Complexity

The uncertainty surrounding Gresini’s future is compounded by developments in the rider market. Alex Marquez, runner-up in the 2025 championship, is expected to move to KTM’s factory team in 2027.

Meanwhile, Fermin Aldeguer is set to remain within Ducati’s ecosystem by joining VR46. His contract is held directly with Ducati, giving the manufacturer greater control over rider allocation.

These changes have reportedly caused internal tensions, particularly for team owner Nadia Padovani, who was not expecting Aldeguer’s move.

Ducati’s Position and Strategic Importance

Responding to the speculation, Davide Tardozzi emphasised Ducati’s desire to retain Gresini as a key partner.

“We don’t want to lose them. They are a great team, starting from their debut results with Enea Bastianini’s win in Qatar 2022,” Tardozzi said.

“We will do everything we can, but I think they also want to stay with Ducati.”

His comments reflect Gresini’s strategic importance within Ducati’s long-term planning, both in terms of competitive results and technical development.

Honda Factor and 2027 Implications

On the other side, Honda HRC has shown signs of performance recovery, making it an increasingly attractive option for independent teams. Should Gresini join Honda, the manufacturer could field up to six bikes on the grid through its factory team, LCR, and Gresini.

Such an expansion would significantly enhance Honda’s development capabilities by increasing data flow across different riders and race conditions.

Within this context, Gresini’s decision for 2027 is poised to become a key factor in shaping the competitive landscape of MotoGP. Ducati faces the challenge of maintaining its satellite network, while Honda looks to strengthen its resurgence through strategic partnerships.

Overall, the situation highlights the complex interplay between manufacturer strategy, rider contracts, and long-term technical development. The outcome of Gresini’s decision will carry substantial implications for the balance of power in MotoGP over the coming seasons.
