Ducati enters the MotoGP Austrian Grand Prix 2026 weekend with cautious optimism after an impressive showing at Misano. However, the challenge from KTM at the Red Bull Ring has proven tougher than expected. Marc Marquez, Ducati's lead rider, has yet to show his maximum speed, but that doesn't mean Ducati isn't in the fight.
In Friday's practice sessions, Marquez finished fourth in both sessions, same as in the morning. He spent many laps on the soft rear tyre, and on lap 17 he was still able to produce a competitive time of 1m29.812s—only around three tenths of a second slower than the all-time best race lap set by Francesco Bagnaia back in 2024. This offers a glimpse into Marquez's race potential, especially since Acosta's fastest Practice time was still fully six tenths away from the 2024 pole.
However, Marquez was way down the top speed charts, giving a fair amount away even to his fellow Ducatis. That could be a space worth watching as the weekend unfolds. He may need every boost he can get in order to produce a quick enough qualifying lap to allow him to cash in on race pace.
Notably, Fermin Aldeguer from Gresini was the man leading the way for Borgo Panigale on Friday. Aldeguer is known for his prowess on the special tyre carcass used this weekend, which helped him win his sole grand prix in Indonesia last season. He also pushed Marquez—then at the absolute zenith of his summer 2025 dominance—for victory at this very race last season. Don't expect Aldeguer to go anywhere as this weekend continues.

With KTM showing strength on home soil, Ducati must work hard to overcome this challenge. However, with Marquez known for holding back early on a weekend and Aldeguer showing promise, Ducati still has a chance to fight for victory in Austria.
