David Alonso Conquers Sepang to Seal Brilliant Moto2 Malaysia Victory

A masterclass performance was delivered by David Alonso during the Moto2 race at the Sepang Circuit, where the Colombian rider successfully secured his second victory of the season. Behind this sweet result, the race was far from straightforward as the young talent nearly suffered a race-ending crash in the closing stages that almost wiped out his comfortable leading margin.

Starting from further down the order compared to the front-row occupants, Alonso displayed an exceptionally impressive race pace around the Sepang tarmac. By the sixth lap, he successfully overtook his teammate Daniel Holgado, who had previously maintained the race lead right after the starting lights went out. Sustained superior speed allowed the Aspar squad to firmly dictate the intermediate class proceedings.

However true drama unfolded with five laps remaining as the riders had to wrestle with severe rear tyre degradation. Alonso suffered a heart-stopping moment at Turn 14, narrowly avoiding a heavy crash that could have ruined his afternoon. Fortunately, he managed a remarkable save and preserved his leading position to the checkered flag, although Holgado managed to close the gap significantly before the finish line.

Alonso's masterclass at Sepang was further complemented by Daniel Holgado crossing the line in second place, sealing a dominant one-two finish for the Aspar outfit. Meanwhile, the final step of the podium was claimed by Angel Piqueras, who put on a stellar performance throughout the weekend to secure his maiden podium finish in the Moto2 category.

The battle for the intermediate class world championship crown has now intensified dramatically with only a handful of rounds remaining. Manuel Gonzalez, who fought hard after starting from ninth on the grid, had to finish directly behind his closest title rival, Izan Guevara. This result narrows the championship gap to a razor-thin 3.5 points with three races left on the calendar.
