Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Daniel Ricciardo has given his first comical reaction to Max Verstappen running the number 3, a race number long associated with the Australian, in official content posted by Red Bull Racing.
Verstappen was forced to relinquish the use of the number 1 after losing the 2025 Formula 1 world championship to Lando Norris. Under FIA regulations, the number 1 is reserved exclusively for the reigning world champion, requiring Verstappen to select an alternative number for the upcoming season.
Rather than reverting to his traditional number 33, Verstappen received explicit permission from Ricciardo to use the number 3. The number had remained unavailable without Ricciardo’s consent, given its strong personal association and Ricciardo’s continued presence within the Formula 1 paddock.
The number 3 appeared on Verstappen’s car for the first time during last week’s five-day Barcelona test, having already been spotted on Red Bull team apparel during the launch of the RB22. That event marked the moment Ricciardo first noticed Verstappen officially carrying the number.
In footage shared by Red Bull, Verstappen is seen approaching Ricciardo from behind and placing his hands on him, prompting an immediate and humorous response from the Australian.
Ah, I know those soft hands.
At the time, Ricciardo was speaking with Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies, who reacted to the moment with a dry remark of his own.
That’s a bit scary.
Verstappen then continued the exchange in a light-hearted manner, before the focus shifted to the number now featured on his cap.
I do love a manicure, pedicure.
Upon seeing the number design up close, Ricciardo acknowledged the change with humour and approval.
Woah, this is the three.
Ah, c’est magnifique!
