David Coulthard has not held back. The former Formula 1 driver launched a scathing critique of the Madring circuit, calling its inaugural race devoid of overtaking and warning that returning in 2027 without layout changes would be "stupidity."
The race was indeed a procession. Lando Norris started from pole but lost the lead due to a mistimed virtual safety car, allowing Kimi Antonelli, the Mercedes driver and current championship leader, to snatch his eighth grand prix win of the season. Yet behind them, there was hardly any on-track action.
Criticism poured in, especially from fans who found the race boring. Coulthard, now a commentator, insisted that the organizers must listen. "We've got to listen to the fans," he said on the Up To Speed podcast. "We can't say, 'Oh, you're wrong.' If they think the race was boring, then that's what they think."
Coulthard sees an opportunity to make changes before 2027. He recalled Max Verstappen's comment that he wasn't worried about Norris catching him because all he needed to do was drive in the middle of the track, like in Monaco. "If we take all that information and come back next year with exactly the same, then put the same cake mix into the oven and expect a different outcome, that's stupidity," he said.
He offered concrete suggestions. A slow chicane like Monza's, for instance, could create overtaking opportunities due to braking distance. "The first and second chicanes are currently too fast. So you enter on a shallow line with too much speed," Coulthard explained. Alternatively, he suggested a loop or hairpin in that area to encourage attempts. "That's the only thing you can do," he added.
The middle part of the circuit, which is fast and flowing, is difficult to change because it must connect to the end. However, Coulthard hopes that modifications at key points could improve the racing. Otherwise, Madring risks being a visually stunning but dull circuit.
With his reputation as a veteran who has experienced many circuits, Coulthard's critique is a wake-up call for Formula 1. They must decide whether to invest time and resources to alter Madring or face the prospect of another boring race in 2027. That decision will be eagerly awaited, especially by fans craving action at every corner.
