Colton Herta has admitted that his pursuit of a Formula 1 seat has reached a critical juncture following a frustrating administrative setback regarding his Super License points. The American driver openly acknowledged that the current situation represents a do-or-die moment for his ultimate racing ambitions.
The complication arose after an unexpected error from IndyCar, which initially listed Herta in sixth place in the standings rather than his actual seventh-place finish. This miscalculation left him short of the mandatory 40 Super License points required to compete in Formula 1, despite completing a practice outing with Cadillac.
Under current rules, drivers earn one Super License point for completing a minimum of 100 kilometers during an official Free Practice session. Cadillac had anticipated that the outing would finally push him to the magic number of 40, but he remains one point shy, further complicating his path to the pinnacle of motorsport.

Speaking about when he discovered the discrepancy, Colton Herta revealed he was completely caught off guard. "To be honest, I haven’t paid too much attention. I was literally walking to go do the media stuff, and that was the first time I had heard about it," he told media, including Motorsport Week.
With time running out to secure his future, the 26-year-old understands that his window of opportunity is rapidly closing. Having navigated a complex career path from IndyCar to Formula 2 in search of license points, he emphasized that returning to his previous paths is no longer a viable option if he misses out this time around.
