Franco Colapinto has been given a five-place grid penalty for the Malaysian Grand Prix following the multi-car collision he caused at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku. The stewards announced the decision after reviewing video and timing evidence.
How the Incident Unfolded
The race was neutralised by a safety car after Alexander Albon crashed out. At the restart, Colapinto suffered a massive lock-up at Turn 1, losing control of his Alpine and slamming into Pierre Gasly's car. Gasly then hit Lando Norris' McLaren, ending all three drivers' races.
Norris, furious, initially called for a race ban for Colapinto before watching a replay. However, the stewards opted for a 10-second penalty, converted to a five-place grid drop for Sepang because Colapinto had retired and could not serve the time penalty.
Stewards' Verdict and Conversion
In their report, the stewards stated that Colapinto was wholly or predominantly to blame for the collision. Although it occurred at the first corner after the restart, there was no contribution from another driver to justify a more lenient approach. Under Article B1.9.6.(e) of the 2026 F1 Regulations, the penalty was converted to a grid drop as the driver failed to finish.
This penalty is a setback for Colapinto, who is striving to prove himself in his rookie season. The grid drop at Sepang will make it harder for him to score points at a circuit that demands precision and tyre management.
Lindblad Escapes Punishment
The stewards also explained why Arvid Lindblad was not penalised for spinning his Racing Bulls teammate Liam Lawson at the same time. They determined that the contact was primarily caused by the chain reaction from Colapinto's crash. Lindblad was sandwiched between cars with limited space, making the contact unavoidable. No further action was taken.
This decision highlights the stewards' contextual analysis, distinguishing between instigators and victims in chaotic situations.
Implications for Alpine and the 2026 Season
The penalty adds pressure on Alpine, who are fighting in the midfield. Losing grid positions in Malaysia could hinder their points chances. Colapinto, known for his aggression, must exercise more caution to avoid similar sanctions.
With stricter regulations, drivers are required to be more disciplined, especially during restarts. The Baku incident serves as a reminder that even small errors can lead to heavy penalties and team setbacks.
