Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Former Red Bull team principal Christian Horner believes Daniel Ricciardo would have become a Formula 1 world champion if he had been provided with more competitive machinery during his time at Red Bull Racing.

Ricciardo joined the Milton Keynes based team in 2014 and spent five seasons with Red Bull. During that period, the team was not in a position to mount a sustained championship challenge, despite Ricciardo securing multiple race victories and a series of podium finishes.

The Australian retired from Formula 1 after the 2024 season, yet he remains one of the most popular figures among fans, largely due to his upbeat personality and strong presence away from the circuit.

Speaking on the Christian O’Connell Show, Horner highlighted Ricciardo’s character and the impact he had within the team environment.

“Daniel is just a great guy,” Horner said.
“He lights up a room when he walks in. He has a big personality and a big heart. I just clicked with him.”

Reflecting on Red Bull’s competitive cycles, Horner noted that the team’s most successful periods came either before or after Ricciardo’s tenure, reinforcing his view that the timing denied Ricciardo a genuine title opportunity.

“He was a wonderful driver, and unfortunately, when he was at his peak, we did not have the most competitive car on the grid,” Horner explained.
“If we had, he could have been a world champion. He is a great guy and I think the sport misses Daniel.”

Horner also offered further insight into Ricciardo’s personality beyond his on track performances, recalling moments that made him a distinctive presence in the paddock.

“That smile is unforgettable, and he is also a great singer,” Horner added.
“I used to host a party after the Silverstone race, and his version of Wagon Wheel became legendary.”

“I even made him sing it once at a Christmas party, which he never forgave me for,” he continued.
“Just a big personality with a lot of charisma.”

Horner’s comments underline the belief that Ricciardo’s career was shaped as much by circumstance as by talent. While he never claimed a world title, his reputation as both a top level driver and a charismatic ambassador for Formula 1 remains firmly intact.
