Charles Leclerc continued his impressive pace by topping the second practice session of the 2026 Formula 1 Mexico City Grand Prix at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. Having already led the earlier session, the Monegasque driver posted a blistering lap time of 1m17.827s to edge out his closest rivals on the newly resurfaced circuit.
This result marked Ferrari's fifth consecutive practice-topping performance, highlighting their strong single-lap pace. However, the Scuderia experienced mixed fortunes on Friday as Lewis Hamilton encountered a sudden power loss that forced him to park his car trackside midway through the hour-long session, leaving the team with overnight investigations.
The battle at the sharp end of the timesheets was remarkably close as drivers hunted for grip. Lando Norris finished just 0.103s behind Leclerc in second place, with George Russell a mere 0.003s further back in third. Kimi Antonelli delivered a strong showing in fourth for Mercedes, ahead of the Red Bull duo of Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar.

The session was briefly interrupted by a red flag following a bizarre wheel-to-wheel moment in the stadium section between Verstappen and Liam Lawson. As Verstappen attempted an inside move approaching Turn 12, the two cars made light contact, scattering debris across the track and requiring a brief stoppage before running could resume.
As teams shifted focus to soft-tyre qualifying simulations in the latter half, drama struck Hamilton who briefly climbed to third before reporting a loss of power. Ordered to stop his Ferrari between Turns 3 and 4, the stranded car triggered a brief Virtual Safety Car, capping off a dramatic Friday in Mexico City.
