2026 F1 Mexico GP: Charles Leclerc Dominates Friday Practice in FP2

Charles Leclerc capped off a flawless Friday at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez by topping the second practice session of the 2026 Formula 1 Mexico Grand Prix. The Monegasque driver posted an impressive benchmark of 1m17.827s, outpacing his closest rivals at the notoriously low-grip and high-altitude circuit.

The Ferrari driver's dominance was evident from the opening day's running. Having already led the timesheets in FP1, Leclerc further improved his pace in FP2 despite his teammate, Lewis Hamilton, suffering a reliability issue that forced him to park his car near the exit of Turn 3 due to a power loss.

Track evolution played a pivotal role throughout the one-hour session as grip levels improved with every lap completed. Teams cycled through all three dry tyre compounds early on, allowing drivers to experiment with medium and hard rubber before the crucial qualifying simulations in the latter half.

Drama unfolded mid-session when Max Verstappen engaged in a close encounter with Liam Lawson through the stadium section, scattering debris across the tarmac and triggering a brief red flag period to clear the track safely.

As conditions green-lit once more, the field unleashed the soft compound tyres for ultimate pace. Despite a couple of aborted flying laps due to lock-ups and running wide, Leclerc extracted maximum performance to secure the top spot, ahead of high-fuel long runs that occupied the final twenty minutes of the day.
