The opening track action of the Formula 1 weekend at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez immediately grabbed attention as Charles Leclerc stormed to the top of the timesheets in the first practice session of the 2026 Mexico City Grand Prix. The Monegasque driver dominated the high-altitude circuit with an impressive lap time of 1:18.128 behind the wheel of his Scuderia Ferrari.
Leclerc's pace proved to be remarkably potent, pulling nearly seven tenths of a second clear of his closest challenger and forcing rival teams to scramble for setup adjustments ahead of the upcoming sessions. This commanding performance highlights the competitive edge that the Maranello squad aims to harness throughout the demanding race weekend.
Behind the pacesetter, a wave of young talent made major headlines during an FP1 session featuring no fewer than 10 rookie drivers. Kimi Antonelli put in a standout performance for the Mercedes squad to secure second place overall, closely followed by fellow young charger Frederik Vesti who took third in the sister Silver Arrow.
Meanwhile, seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton rounded out the top four for Ferrari, displaying strong adaptation to the unique challenges of the Mexican layout. The tightly contested midfield also saw impressive runs from drivers like Ayumu Iwasa and Pierre Gasly as they extracted maximum performance from their machines in the thin air.
Ahead of the on-track action, paddock chatter centered around Leclerc batting away George Russell’s pre-weekend claim that Ferrari entered the event as the clear favorites. This psychological sparring between top contenders sets the stage for an unpredictable and fiercely fought remainder of the weekend.
