Carlos Sainz Hints Williams Future Decision Coming Soon

Carlos Sainz has hinted that a decision on his Williams Formula 1 future will be made in the coming days. The Spaniard is increasingly linked with a switch to Audi, making him a key mover in the driver market.

The summer shutdown often proves decisive for contract negotiations, and with the Madrid Grand Prix scheduled shortly after the break, there is an ideal window for an announcement. "I honestly don't know. I cannot give you a date, but I imagine, as I always said, that I was going to wait until the summer to sit down with my team and think about this," Sainz said.

"I expect that during the summer we will start to take a decision and start to see a bit more of the situation, but the exact timing, I don't know," he added. These comments come amid growing speculation that Audi is a serious contender for his services, potentially reshaping the F1 grid for 2026.

When Sainz joined Williams from Ferrari ahead of the 2025 season, he was sold on a vision of fighting for wins in the new era. Despite surprise podiums in Azerbaijan and Qatar last year, results have been hard to come by this season. Williams was the only team to miss the pre-season shakedown in Spain and failed to bring its planned upgrade package until the fourth round in Miami.

To date, Sainz's best finish is ninth, achieved three times in China, Miami, and Canada, but he has failed to score a point in the six races since. This poor run has forced him to reassess his timeline with the British squad.

"I think there's no secret that my expectations, or my timeline for how long it would take me to win a race again with Williams, have been delayed by a year or two," Sainz admitted. "I had in my mind a timeframe that I was willing to accept to help this team get back into a winning position, but clearly that timeline is going to be longer than expected."

Despite the struggles, Sainz remains confident in the team's direction. "I still see the vision of the team being pretty clear. I see how much is going on behind the scenes, and this still gives me confidence and motivation that we're going in the right direction," he said. However, he acknowledged the current car has underperformed significantly.

"Clearly, my timings have changed. I need to readapt my thinking into portraying myself now in three to four years' time and take a decision, but I'm still confident in the path and the project that we are in," he concluded.
