Cadillac Replace Team Principal in Shock Mid-Season Twist

Cadillac has made a surprising decision to replace their team principal just halfway through their debut F1 season. Graeme Lowdon has stepped down from his role, with the returning Marcin Budkowski taking his place, as announced by the newest team on the grid on Wednesday. This marks a significant shift in direction for the General Motors and TWG Motorsports-backed outfit.

Lowdon had been a key figure from the very beginning of Cadillac's F1 project. He played a crucial role in the often complicated process of securing the entry rights before being appointed team principal in early December 2024. However, the team's poor performance in the first half of the season has been a major source of pressure. With two experienced drivers, Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas, Cadillac has been plagued by continuous technical issues. Their car, designated the MAC-26, has fallen far short of even the lower midfield, with no significant progress since the start of the season.

Marcin Budkowski: A Seasoned Professional

Budkowski, 49, brings over two decades of F1 engineering and managerial experience. He began his career as an engineer for Prost in 2001, then joined Ferrari from 2002 to 2007, during a significant part of the Michael Schumacher era. He later moved to McLaren, where he stayed from 2007 to 2014. His technical expertise was further honed when he became the F1 technical and sporting coordinator at the FIA, effectively heading the technical department for F1.

In 2017, Budkowski joined Renault as executive technical director, managing the team's day-to-day operations while overseeing HR, finance, and talent recruitment. He remained with the Enstone-based team during its transition to Alpine, where he was appointed executive director. He celebrated a race victory with the team at the Hungarian Grand Prix courtesy of Esteban Ocon before leaving in January 2022. His appointment as team principal signals that the owners are looking to shift gears and accelerate the rookie squad's progress.

This decision is certainly a head-turner, as Lowdon was an integral part of Cadillac's journey from the start. However, with results far from expectations, a change at the helm is seen as a necessary step. Budkowski is expected to bring better technical and managerial stability, though the challenges in the second half of the season remain daunting.
