Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Chinese automotive giant BYD has confirmed that discussions have taken place with Formula 1 regarding a potential future involvement in the championship.

The confirmation came from BYD vice president Stella Li, who revealed that the company has been in contact with F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, with meetings having taken place in Shanghai and communication continuing on a regular basis.

“We met Stefano Domenicali in Shanghai. We maintain a warm relationship and are in regular contact,” Li stated during the Beijing Motor Show.

The development highlights Formula 1’s growing appeal to major global manufacturers, particularly from China. BYD has rapidly expanded its presence in the electric vehicle market and recently surpassed Tesla to become the world’s leading EV seller.

While the company has previously held discussions with Formula E, its engagement with Formula 1 represents a potential shift toward the pinnacle of global motorsport, aligning with broader ambitions in technology development and brand positioning.

This also aligns with the strategic direction of the FIA, whose president Mohammed Ben Sulayem has expressed openness to expanding the grid to 12 teams, particularly if a major manufacturer from China is involved.

At this stage, it remains unclear whether BYD’s interest would materialise as a standalone team entry or through collaboration with an existing outfit. However, the confirmation of active discussions indicates a serious level of engagement.

Li also emphasized the broader appeal of Formula 1 beyond competition, highlighting its cultural and aspirational value for drivers and audiences alike.

“I love Formula 1 because it’s about passion and culture, and people dream of driving in Formula 1. Yes, we are talking about it. It’s a real opportunity to test our technology,” she explained.

If realised, BYD’s entry would represent a significant milestone for Formula 1, strengthening its global manufacturer base while reinforcing the championship’s technological evolution in the upcoming regulatory era.
