BRT is facing a double disqualification after both its cars failed to meet the minimum lap requirement in the Supercars race at Mount Panorama. The #7 entry of James Golding and Richie Stanaway finished seventh, but Stanaway's impressive pace in wet conditions prompted the team to keep him in the car for 91 of the scheduled 147 laps. Because the race went time-certain at the end of lap 141, Golding did not complete his required minimum of 54 laps.
The #3 car of Aaron Cameron and Zak Best suffered a similar fate. It finished 25th after a series of incidents and time spent in the garage for repairs, completing only 137 laps. Cameron also fell short of the 54-lap minimum due to Best's long stint. According to the regulations, both cars are set to be disqualified, though officials have yet to confirm.
This would be a disastrous outcome for Golding, who currently sits 10th in the championship with one round remaining before the Finals Series cutoff. Losing points from the Bathurst result could severely damage his chances of making the finals. Meanwhile, Stanaway showcased remarkable speed in the wet, but the team's decision to extend his stint ultimately led to the rule breach.
The incident highlights the critical importance of strategic management in endurance racing, especially when weather conditions are unpredictable. Teams must ensure that driving time distribution meets the minimum lap requirements for each driver. Failure to comply can result in disqualification, penalizing both team and drivers.
