BMW has officially started mass production of the i3, the second model in its Neue Klasse lineup, at its Munich plant. This milestone marks a new chapter for the German automaker, which from next year will exclusively build fully electric vehicles at its historic factory.
The announcement comes after BMW opened orders earlier than planned in mid-June. Market response has been overwhelming—so much so that BMW has had to accelerate capacity expansion. The Munich plant has undergone a massive transformation over the past four years, including a new body shop and assembly area with advanced logistics.
Peter Weber, head of the Munich plant, revealed that i3 production will cut manufacturing costs by an additional 10 percent. This efficiency is achieved through forward-thinking planning, close collaboration with development teams and suppliers, and the integration of modern production technologies.
BMW emphasizes that Neue Klasse is more than just a model—it's a future-proof architecture that will sustain the plant's competitiveness for decades. With i3 production underway, Munich is poised to become a hub for efficient, sustainable premium electric manufacturing.
