Since its debut in 2016, the Baku City Circuit has been a stage for drama and surprises. The race in Azerbaijan's capital was initially introduced as the European Grand Prix before being renamed the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in 2017. Nico Rosberg was the pioneer, winning the inaugural edition in 2016 with Mercedes. A year later, Daniel Ricciardo delivered a historic win for Red Bull in Baku. However, Mercedes reasserted dominance with Lewis Hamilton in 2018 and Valtteri Bottas in 2019. This streak was interrupted when Sergio Perez and Max Verstappen traded victories for Red Bull in 2021, 2022, and 2023.
A historic moment came in 2024 when Oscar Piastri brought McLaren back to the top step in Baku. Unfortunately, McLaren's resurgence was halted by Max Verstappen, who won again in 2025. Finally, in 2026, George Russell closed the list with a win for Mercedes, reaffirming that the Silver Arrows still have the perfect recipe for this challenging street circuit.
Looking at the long list, it's clear that Baku is no ordinary circuit. The narrow street track with blind corners and long straights demands bravery and smart strategy. Mercedes and Red Bull have proven most adept at reading situations, while others like McLaren and Ferrari still struggle for consistency.
