Max Verstappen will step aside during the opening practice session at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez for the Mexico City Grand Prix as Red Bull continues fulfilling its mandatory rookie run quotas. Teams are strictly required to give inexperienced drivers at least four practice outings throughout the season, split evenly between their contracted race drivers.
Stepping into the RB22 in place of the four-time world champion will be Ayumu Iwasa. The Japanese prospect has already accumulated significant mileage this term, having previously featured in FP1 at Barcelona and Monza, in addition to a run with the Racing Bulls squad earlier in Austria.
This outing marks Iwasa's eighth grand prix practice appearance in total, as well as his second consecutive run at the Mexico venue following a similar outing with Racing Bulls last season. The Milton Keynes-based outfit aims to balance mandatory rookie running while fine-tuning their package for the remainder of the racing weekend.

The scheduling adjustment comes on the heels of a recent resurgence for the squad, which claimed victories in Sepang and Singapore alongside a podium finish at the United States Grand Prix. However, persistent issues regarding sluggish race starts and team radio communication continue to challenge the reigning world champion.
