Formula 1, Sportrik Media - The 2026 Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park will operate under a reduced pitlane speed limit, with organisers lowering it from 80 km/h to 60 km/h to accommodate the arrival of an 11th team, Cadillac, on the Formula 1 grid.
Melbourne hosts the opening round of the new regulatory era this weekend, with all teams debuting cars built to the latest technical regulations. The addition of Cadillac has increased operational demands within Albert Park’s relatively compact pitlane infrastructure, prompting safety-driven adjustments.
Australian Grand Prix chief events officer Tom Mottram explained that extensive coordination with Formula 1 had taken place over the past year to manage the integration of the additional team.

“Our pit building and pitlane are probably one of the smaller ones on the calendar at the moment, so we’ve done a lot of work with F1 throughout the year since we’ve known the 11th team is coming on board to make sure we’ve got additional team hospitality, additional freight storage, additional pitwall room and things like that,” Mottram told Motorsport.com.
However, the physical garage space could not be expanded in time for this year’s event, necessitating operational compromises.
“The one thing that we can’t really change, unfortunately, at least this year, is the garage space,” he added.
As a result, the pitlane speed limit has been reduced to 60 km/h due to tighter entry and exit margins for teams. The adjustment is expected to influence race strategy calculations, particularly in terms of pit stop delta times and undercut or overcut opportunities during the grand prix.
Mottram indicated that the change is likely a temporary measure, with Albert Park holding a long-term contract to host Formula 1 and potential infrastructure refinements possible in future seasons.
“It is a bit of a one-year stop-gap where it will be a bit of a squeeze. It also meant we’ve had to reduce our pitlane speed from 80 km/h to 60 km/h, just because it will be a little bit tighter for teams to pull in. But we wouldn’t change that for the excitement that will come with the 11th team in Cadillac.”
The revised pitlane regulation adds another strategic variable to the season opener, as teams navigate both new technical rules and expanded grid operations at the start of the 2026 championship campaign.
