Australian Grand Prix Corporation CEO Travis Auld has shut down speculation that Melbourne could return to the season-opening slot, confirming that the 2027 Australian Grand Prix will remain on April 1-4. The announcement comes amid ongoing instability in the Middle East that threatens the planned opening rounds in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.
Speaking to Speedcafe and other media at Albert Park on Thursday, Auld revealed that while the contract with Formula 1 allows Australia to be placed anywhere between rounds one and three, the ongoing redevelopment of the Albert Park pit complex leaves no room for flexibility. "Our date's been locked in now, April 1-4, and clearly we've got a big asset being built behind us that has some timelines attached to it," he said.
When asked directly by Speedcafe whether the event could be brought forward if F1 requested, Auld was unequivocal: "I think it would be difficult for us to move that date now, yes."
The new pit building at Albert Park is scheduled to be partially operational for the 2027 event, with the ground level and much of the first floor due to be completed before the grand prix. The full project is not expected to be finished until the 2028 race, further complicating any potential date change.
Despite the uncertainty, F1 is reportedly considering contingency options should Bahrain and Saudi Arabia be unable to host their races. These include bringing forward the Chinese and Japanese Grands Prix, which are currently scheduled immediately after Australia, allowing Melbourne to retain its position as round three.
In a major boost for the event, Melbourne will stage its first Formula 1 sprint in 2027 as the championship expands the format from six weekends this season to a record 10. Australia is one of five new sprint venues alongside Bahrain, Japan, Monaco, and Abu Dhabi. Auld revealed that the AGPC had pushed hard for the format in discussions with F1. "I know we had lengthy conversations about our desire to have a sprint race," he said. "I think awarding a sprint race to us is a sign they trust us as an event."
With its date locked in and a sprint race secured, Melbourne is gearing up for a bold new chapter in 2027. However, the lingering instability in the Middle East continues to pose a challenge for Formula 1 as it finalises its calendar.
