Audi Solid on Works Debut: F1 2026 Mid-Season Grades

Audi has made an encouraging start to its new era in Formula 1. As a works team for the first time in 2026, the Swiss-based squad has collected 12 points and sits eighth in the standings heading into the summer break. Despite a long point-less streak, their performances in the latter part of the first half show tangible progress.

The Audi project is built on the foundations of an underfunded Sauber team. However, their biggest challenge has been producing their first-ever F1 power unit in Neuburg. The result? While not yet on par with Mercedes, Audi's power unit is considered respectable for a first attempt. But there are consequences, particularly in terms of faster battery degradation and poor starts throughout the season.

Reliability has also been a thorn. Several bizarre incidents have hit Nico Hulkenberg, including in Austria where a piece of gravel triggered his car's kill switch. Gabriel Bortoleto, the remarkable rookie, has been consistent and often the team's differentiator. The combination of experience and young talent has proven to be the right choice.

Audi's peak performance came at power-hungry circuits like Silverstone and Spa-Francorchamps, where they competed at the front of the midfield. This has been a real boost for the team. Audi project CEO Mattia Binotto emphasized that the team is on track and not expecting overnight results.

“We are still like last year's Sauber, with everything we are building on top. Changing ownership, brand, or car livery isn't enough to suddenly find yourself with 300 more people, new facilities, and better tools,” Binotto said. He is also confident that Audi's power unit will become top-notch within a couple of seasons.

With all the limitations, Audi's mid-season grade is a B+. They have shown the project is on plan, and solid foundations are being laid for the ambitious 2030 goal. Fans can expect great things from the German manufacturer in the future.
