Fernando Alonso has not yet committed to his Formula 1 future beyond 2026, but he insists he will remain in the paddock, with Aston Martin, in some capacity. His comments came as the 2027 technical regulations take shape and major obstacles appear to be resolved.
Alonso, who turns 45 this year, has been vocal about his concerns regarding the 2026 power unit regulations, which split power 50-50 between the internal combustion engine and battery. For him, the enjoyment factor of driving will determine whether he continues in F1.
However, Aston Martin Chief Trackside Officer Mike Krack offered a positive outlook. He believes the FIA has ironed out the “big roadblocks” in the 2027-2028 regulations. “I cannot really comment much more on Alonso’s future because the regulations or the roadmap for 2027-2028 have been heavily laid out,” Krack told media including Motorsport Week on media day ahead of the Azerbaijan GP. “There’s always going to be a little bit of fine-tuning, as we have seen this year, but the big roadblocks have been fixed. I don’t expect a massive deviation from this.”
The FIA has indeed planned significant changes, including a 60-40 power split by 2028 and other tweaks to the format. This could entice Alonso to stay at least one more year with the Silverstone-based team.
Although he did not hint at a contract extension, Alonso pledged he “will be around” the sport for years to come. “Yes, I will be around,” he said. “As I said many times, I will keep driving, if it’s in Formula 1 or other categories, I don’t really know. While I’m in Formula 1, I will be with this team, driving or not driving, because I love the sport. Formula 1 is my life, motorsport is my life, and it will always be.”
Alonso hopes for a competitive outing in Baku to reinforce his commitment to Aston Martin as crunch time approaches. The Azerbaijan street circuit has always been a stage for drama, and a strong result could signal that the green project is still worth fighting for.
Meanwhile, Krack emphasised that the team is in no rush. They understand Alonso’s analytical nature and want to ensure he has all the information needed. “We respect the process. Fernando is a very analytical driver, and we want to make sure he gets all the information he needs,” Krack added.
With regulations becoming clearer and Alonso’s commitment unwavering, his F1 future seems set to continue, whether as a driver or mentor. One thing is certain: the paddock will always be his home.
