Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll will start the Azerbaijan Grand Prix from the back of the grid after Aston Martin was forced to change multiple power unit components on both cars. The combined penalties amount to a staggering 45 grid positions, a severe blow for a team already enduring a tough season.
According to an official FIA statement, Alonso will take on his fifth internal combustion engine, fifth turbocharger, and ninth auxiliary power unit component. These changes incur a 25-place grid penalty, meaning the Spaniard will start from the very back.
His teammate Lance Stroll faces a slightly lighter sanction. The Canadian will use a sixth turbocharger, seventh energy store, sixth control electronics unit, and eighth auxiliary component, resulting in a 20-place drop. He will line up just ahead of Alonso on the Baku City Circuit grid.
This decision compounds Aston Martin's struggles in the midfield. With both cars starting from the rear, scoring points in Azerbaijan becomes an uphill battle. Alonso and Stroll will need to dig deep to carve through the field, especially on a street circuit where overtaking is notoriously difficult.
The penalties also highlight the team's ongoing reliability and performance issues. Exceeding the allowed power unit allocations indicates the pressure the Silverstone-based squad is under, both technically and strategically.
For Alonso, this is not the first time he's faced a hefty grid drop this season. Yet his fighting spirit remains unshaken. He will look to maximise any opportunity, even from a disadvantaged starting position. Stroll is also expected to put up a fight to salvage something for the team.
With this setback, Aston Martin might shift focus to data collection and preparation for upcoming races. But in Baku, anything can happen. Street races often deliver surprises, and perhaps Alonso or Stroll can capitalise on chaos to secure an unexpected result.
