Andrea Kimi Antonelli took a stunning victory at the 2026 Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona. The Mercedes driver completed 57 laps in 1:34'23.754, beating Red Bull's Max Verstappen by 4.351 seconds. Lando Norris of McLaren finished third, 5.089 seconds adrift.
The race was intense from the start. Antonelli, starting second, seized the lead early and controlled the pace. Verstappen, who started third, pressured but could not pass. Norris, who started from pole, had to settle for third after losing positions early on. Charles Leclerc finished fourth, with George Russell completing the top five.
On lap 6, Lewis Hamilton suffered brake failure and retired. The Ferrari driver was the only technical DNF. Carlos Sainz also crashed out at lap 43, while Sergio Perez had already retired at lap 31.
This victory is Antonelli's first of the 2026 season and strengthens his championship position. He now leads the drivers' standings with 25 points, ahead of Verstappen and Norris. The battle for the title is heating up.
Mercedes' performance was strong, with Russell setting the fastest lap at 1:35.587. Red Bull, meanwhile, will need to work harder to close the gap, though Verstappen remains a threat.
Further back, Liam Lawson finished sixth for Red Bull, followed by Franco Colapinto in seventh. Oscar Piastri was eighth after starting from the back, with Arvid Lindblad and Nico Hulkenberg completing the top ten.
With this result, the championship standings are tight. Antonelli leads from Verstappen, with Norris and Leclerc close behind. Mercedes leads the constructors' championship, followed by Red Bull and McLaren. The next race will be crucial for the rivals to catch up.
