Kimi Antonelli closed the opening day at F1's newest circuit, the Madring, with the fastest lap. The Mercedes driver, who also leads the championship, set a time of 1:33.662s, edging out the Ferrari duo of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton by just over a tenth.
Antonelli, who holds a 66-point cushion over teammate George Russell, impressed in the second practice session. Leclerc and Hamilton took second and third respectively, while Arvid Lindblad of Racing Bulls surprised with fourth place.
Unfortunately, the session was marred by a single red flag incident. Arvid Lindblad crashed at the fast left-hander, Turn 13, causing a 12-minute delay. Fortunately, the young driver was unharmed.
At McLaren, Lando Norris had to end his session early due to a gearbox issue that forced the team to change components. The reigning F1 champion did not set a time and ended up at the bottom of the timesheet. This is a blow for McLaren, who hoped to compete at the front.
Meanwhile, Max Verstappen of Red Bull had to settle for sixth, nearly four tenths down on Antonelli. Oscar Piastri completed the top seven, followed by Yuki Tsunoda, Esteban Ocon, and Liam Lawson rounding out the top ten.
The FP2 results provide an early indication of the competition at the 2026 Spanish Grand Prix. With the new circuit in Madrid, finding the ideal setup poses a unique challenge for drivers and teams. Qualifying and the race will be the true test.
