Alpine has officially announced the appointment of Mike Elliott as its new Chief Technical Officer (CTO). Elliott, formerly Mercedes' technical boss, returns to the paddock after a three-year absence. The move marks a new chapter for the Enstone-based team.
Elliott is no stranger to Alpine, having previously worked at the team in its Renault/Lotus iterations from 2008 to 2012 as principal aerodynamicist. Now he returns with a mission to elevate the team's performance as it aims to break into the top four.
During his time at Mercedes, Elliott was a key part of the team's dominance in the late 2010s. However, his tenure as technical director coincided with Mercedes' slump in the 2022 regulations. The 'no sidepod' design concept developed under his leadership proved problematic, dropping Mercedes from title contention to occasional race wins.
In early 2023, Elliott and James Allison swapped roles. Elliott moved to the CTO position previously held by Allison, while Allison returned as technical director. Six months later, Elliott announced he was leaving Mercedes to take a break from F1. That break has now ended with his Alpine appointment.
Alpine stated that Elliott's signing "strengthens the team's technical capabilities as the team looks to build on the improved performances on track and close the gap to the top four teams". His CTO title suggests a focus on long-term development and future regulations, while executive technical director David Sanchez will lead the development of the 2026 and 2027 cars.
This move signals Alpine's ambition to bounce back. With Elliott's experience at a top team, the technical structure is expected to become more robust. However, the challenge remains immense given the increasing competitiveness of F1. Fans will be eager to see how Elliott shapes the team's technical strategy to bring Alpine back to the front.
