The two-time Formula 1 world champion recently revealed that he took his son, Leonard, for his first karting experience when the baby was just two months old. In an interview with Spanish media outlet El Larguero, the Aston Martin driver opened up about this heartwarming moment, offering a rare glimpse into his private life.
Leonard was born in March, just before the Japanese Grand Prix, which caused Alonso to miss media day at Suzuka due to travel arrangements. Now, the infant has already felt the wind on his face during a brief lap in a kart. "We already took a lap in a kart. When he was two months old, I took him for a lap in my arms. He already felt the wind on his face," Alonso said.
For Alonso, sharing his racing world with his son is deeply meaningful. He plans to bring Leonard to circuits starting in the 2027 season. "Next year I want to share the circuits, the trips around the world, and take lots of photos with him," he added. "When I leave Formula 1, it's clear I'm not going to be travelling to 24 countries every year, am I? So, hopefully I can share a little more with them."
Speaking about his now six-month-old son, Alonso couldn't hide his joy. "I think he's delighted with everything. Right now, he's a very smiley child, and it's truly wonderful. When I'm home, the few moments I have make up for all the difficulties we're having professionally," he said.
That happiness at home seems to parallel his recent career decision. Ahead of this weekend's Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, Alonso ended speculation about his future by signing a new contract with Aston Martin for at least one more year. "I'm very happy to sign a new contract with the Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team," he said. "I took my time to make this decision, but racing is my life, my passion, and I know I still have the speed and determination to compete at the highest level. I'm committed for the long term with this team and to helping us succeed."
Alonso also expressed his belief in the team's direction. "I truly believe in what we are building: we have strong leadership, incredible people, partners and facilities. I look forward to making more memories on the race track in front of the passionate fans. Their energy creates an atmosphere that inspires me and is what makes our sport special," he added.
Alonso's decision to stay in F1 until at least 2027 provides stability for a team aiming to break into the front-running group. At an age when many drivers consider retirement, his commitment underscores his enduring motivation and love for racing. Meanwhile, his moments with Leonard remind us that behind the helmet, Alonso is a father eager to pass on his passion for speed.
